Rainwater collector: which volume of tanks to choose?
Rainwater collector: How to choose the right volume?
Concerned about the environment and energy resources, you want to recover rainwater. But for that, you don't know what tank size to choose. It must be said that there is a wide choice of volume ranging from 300 liters to more than 5,000 liters... To make the right choice, two criteria must be taken into account:
- The amount of water you can recover;
- The amount of water you need.
How much water can you recover?
The amount of water you can recover depends on your location and your roof.
So start by learning about the annual local rainfall:
- If you live in a rather dry area, choose a large volume of vat that will allow you to have a larger water supply;
- If you live in a rather humid area, you don't need to see too big, a tank of a small or medium volume remains sufficient (because it will frequently be filled by rain).
Then, also consider the surface of your roof. Depending on the latter, calculate on average 10% water loss (slightly variable from region to region).
Depending on the rate of precipitation and the surface of your roof, you can estimate how much water you can recover. And so, choose the most suitable tank volume.
What are your rainwater needs?
To know the most appropriate volume for your rainwater collector, you also need to define your needs:
- For outdoor use (watering the garden), calculate the surface to be watered with about 10 to 15 l./m2;
- To wash a car, count about 200 l. of water;
- For sanitary use (WC and/or washing machine), average 1000 l. per person;
- For mixed use (outdoor and sanitary), simply add the volumes.
Note: the use of rainwater is regulated. For example, the Ministry of the Environment specifies that rainwater can only be used to water plants, clean a vehicle, drain toilet water (flushing), clean floors and linen (subject to adequate water treatment).
