Introducing Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, a big day of sales to kick off the shopping season in the United States.

It was first used in the 1960s to refer to pedestrian and automobile traffic at the start of Christmas shopping. A few years later, merchants used the term to refer to the "exit from the red" of their accounts to "go back into the dark": it is reported that at a time when accounting was held by hand, the accounts were written in red, because they were in deficit, all year until that famous Friday. The post-Thanksgiving shopping allowed you to get out of the "red," turning the accounts into a positive, allowing them to be written in black ink, hence the term Black Friday.
