Vilmorin Climate-Resilient Lawn Seed 5 kg (EAN : 3182670025631) is a mixture designed for lawns that have to take whatever the weather throws at them : heatwaves, extreme heat, heavy rain, and the sharp swings that have become the rule rather than the exception. Where an ordinary lawn yellows in July and thins out by autumn, this one is selected to hold. A 5 kg bag covers 200 m² for a new lawn or 300 m² for overseeding.
Drought resistance is settled below ground, not at the surface. This mixture is built around tall fescue, a grass whose root system runs far deeper than that of ordinary ornamental lawns. When the top few centimetres of soil are dry, it is still drawing on deeper reserves.
That is what makes the difference in high summer : a lawn that stays green while others have turned straw-coloured, and that recovers without bare patches as soon as the rain returns. Once established, this lawn needs only low watering — which counts for a great deal in regions under restrictions.
Alongside the fescue, the mixture combines tetraploid perennial ryegrass (4N) with standard perennial ryegrass. Tetraploid varieties carry twice the chromosomes of an ordinary one, which translates into plants that are quicker to establish, denser and more disease-resistant.
The benefit works both ways. In the short term, rapid emergence covers the ground before weeds can take hold — a dense lawn is the best weedkiller there is. In the long term, the hardiness of tetraploid grass takes summer stress and winter frost alike.
The sowing window runs all year round, adjusted to the weather at the time — the point being to avoid frost and settled heatwaves. A 5 kg bag covers 200 m² on bare soil, or 300 m² for overseeding.
For overseeding, first scarify to 1 cm deep to open up the thatch, mix the seed with lawn compost, sow, then firm down before watering. First shoots appear within two weeks in favourable conditions, and the lawn becomes fully usable after six to eight weeks. Water regularly until the grass reaches 10 cm.
The first cut comes when the grass reaches 5 to 6 cm. The rule to remember : never remove more than one third of the height at a time. Beyond that, the plant draws on its reserves to rebuild its foliage, at the expense of its roots.
Above all, avoid scalping : a lawn cut too short becomes markedly more vulnerable to wear and drought — precisely what we are trying to avoid here. Leave a few centimetres; it is the shade cast by the blades that keeps the soil cool. Stop mowing at the first cold weather.
