Tight-head drums
The bung drum closes with a screw cap, which gives it a higher level of tightness than a removable lid. It is the container for liquids and viscous products, for long storage as well as transport. Our blue drums are in food-grade HDPE, from the 5-litre jerrycan to the 220-litre drum, some UN certified.
For a solid or pasty product, look rather at the full open head drums — our choice guide compares both families.
Which size to choose? Food grade, UN certification
Which size for which use
| Size | Common uses | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 10 L | Food-grade jerrycan, transport, dosing | By hand, full |
| 20 to 30 L | Back-up reserve, cleaning products, oils | Carried by the handle |
| 60 L | Food liquids, fermentation | Two people, or on a sack truck |
| 120 to 220 L | Water reserve, fixed bulk storage | Sack truck or pallet truck |
One litre of water weighs one kilo: a full 60-litre drum comes to 60 kg and can no longer be moved by hand. Think of the size in terms of where the drum will live, and plan a tap screwed onto the bung if you need to draw off regularly.
Food grade and standards
The HDPE of our drums is suitable for food contact: tested to guarantee that no dye or additive migrates into the contents. It withstands extreme pH, which allows the storage of acidic liquids, and is fully recyclable.
Several references carry a UN certification (ADR/RID), required as soon as a drum carries a classified dangerous good: fuel, solvent, concentrated plant protection product. Our article how to identify a food-grade plastic drum details the recycling codes and pictograms to check.
