Open-top drums
The full open head drum is recognised by its removable lid, which frees an opening equal to the drum diameter. It is the container to choose for solids, powders and pastes, and whenever you need to fill, empty and clean by hand. Our blue drums are in food-grade HDPE, from 30 to 220 litres, with lever locking ring and side handles.
For a liquid, turn to the bung drums — our choice guide compares both families.
Which size to choose? Food grade, UN certification
Which size for which use
| Size | Common uses | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| 30 L | Flour, seeds, animal feed | Carried full |
| 60 L | Harvests, grain, workshop storage | Two people, or partly emptied |
| 120 L | Bulk storage, compost, fixed reserve | Sack truck advised |
| 220 L | Permanent installation, large volumes | Pallet truck or sack truck |
Choose the size by what you can still move once the drum is full: 60 litres of water weigh 60 kg. Two 60 L drums are often better than one 120 L — you handle them alone, and you do not expose the whole stock to air at every opening.
Food grade and standards
The HDPE of our drums is suitable for food contact: tested to guarantee that no dye or additive migrates into the contents. It withstands extreme pH — tomato, gherkin, vinegar — and is fully recyclable.
Some references carry a UN certification (ADR/RID), required as soon as a drum carries a classified dangerous good. For water, a harvest or grain, it is not required. Our article how to identify a food-grade plastic drum details the recycling codes and pictograms to check.
