Cynodon Dactylon Grass Seed 500g - Reference: 4309012

Developed by Vilmorin, French leader in seeds since 1743, this tropical Cynodon Dactylon grass represents excellence in resistant lawns. This 100% pure variety offers exceptional performance in the most demanding climatic conditions, combining aesthetics and robustness for all your landscaping projects.

      Applications and benefits

Cynodon Dactylon stands as the absolute reference for private gardens in warm regions, where traditional grasses struggle to survive scorching summers. Its remarkable adaptability makes it the preferred choice for professional sports grounds: golf courses, football pitches, tennis courts, where resistance to foot traffic and rapid recovery are essential.

Municipal green spaces and commercial landscaping projects also benefit from its exceptional qualities: low water consumption, drought resistance, and ability to maintain its greenness even under severe water stress. This variety is perfectly suited to ecological gardens and xeriscaping projects, where water resource optimisation is a priority.

      Botanical characteristics and performance

Cynodon Dactylon, also known as "bermuda grass", features a deep and extensive root system allowing it to draw moisture from depth. Its fine foliage, of an intense and luminous green, forms a dense and uniform carpet of remarkable resilience.

This stoloniferous perennial grass develops stolons and rhizomes that ensure rapid and homogeneous colonisation of the ground, creating a self-regenerating lawn. Its exceptional tolerance to high temperatures (up to 45°C) and its salt resistance make it an ideal variety for coastal areas and difficult soils.

The 500g pack covers approximately 25 to 30 m² depending on sowing conditions and the desired density. Germination occurs between 15°C and 35°C, with optimal results around 25-30°C.

      Sowing and establishment

The optimal sowing period runs from May to July, when soil temperature consistently reaches 18-20°C. Prepare the ground with light tilling followed by careful levelling, then incorporate organic amendment if necessary.

Sow broadcast at a rate of 15-20g per m², then lightly cover the seeds with gentle raking. Regular but moderate watering is essential during the first 2-3 weeks to ensure even germination. Avoid excess water which could cause seed rot.

The first mowing takes place 6-8 weeks after sowing, when the grass reaches 8-10 cm in height. Then maintain a cutting height of 3-5 cm to optimise drought resistance and encourage stolon development.

      Expert tips and product synergies

To maximise the performance of your Cynodon Dactylon lawn, combine sowing with a phosphorus-rich starter fertiliser to promote initial rooting. Light mulching after sowing can be beneficial in particularly dry regions.

This variety works perfectly with Gardena drip irrigation systems available at Multitanks, enabling targeted and economical watering. Installing a watering programmer will optimise water management, particularly crucial during the first year.

Professional tip: Cynodon Dactylon shows slowed growth in winter in temperate regions, taking on a yellowish hue. This natural winter dormancy phenomenon should not cause concern: the lawn will regain its vigour and colour with the return of spring temperatures. To maintain a green appearance in winter, some professionals carry out autumn overseeding with ryegrass to ensure aesthetic continuity.

Avoid too frequent and too short mowing, which would weaken the plant. Favour regular but moderate mowing, respecting the one-third rule: never cut more than one third of the total grass height.
