How do you choose your garden hose?

With the summer season fast approaching, the time is right to get a garden hose. Here are our tips for finding the right model for you.

Should we take the cheapest/most expensive model?

As is often the case when it comes to investing in gardening equipment, opting for equipment based solely on price is a mistake. Instead of turning to the cheapest/most expensive model, start by identifying your need.

To do this, try to find answers to these few questions: do you need a garden hose that can withstand a lot of pressure or not? Do you want it to be very long to access the 4 corners of your garden, or is it not necessary? Do you need it to consist of a very flexible material? Once you have answered these questions and, therefore, set your priorities, you will know where to start to look.

Identify the number of layers of his pipe

After taking stock of the type of tool you need, it will be time to consider the different existing models. Nevertheless: have one important thing in mind: when it comes to garden hoses, it is the number of layers that determines the strength,as well as the resistance to the sun's rays and the ability not to get tangled.

Be aware that while most first-priced pipes are made up of 3 layers, some can go up to 6 layers, which makes them particularly resistant. When making your choice, the ideal diameter of your hose will depend on how you want to use it.

What diameter to choose for your garden hose?

Most garden hoses have a diameter of 15 mm, but there are pipes with a diameter of 13 mm in diameter, which have the characteristic of supporting a higher pressure. For very long models, a diameter of up to 19 mm is recommended.

In addition, there are so-called "guipé" pipes, which are particularly strong and also allow for high pressure without risk. As for the so-called "knitted" models, which are more flexible, they have the advantage of not twisting andbecoming tangled less easily.

Watering hose: what about the spear gun?

In case you only need one type of pressure, a single-pitched pistol will do. However, if you need to adapt watering to very different plants - cabbages in the vegetable garden, for example, appreciate being sprinkled, which plants don't like as a rule - you'll have to opt for a multifunctional gun, on which you can adjust the pressure and spray as you please.

Wrap your garden hose, how to use it

To make the material last as long as possible, it is advisable to use a wall coiler, which avoids knots and other tendrils that could damage the pipe. If you don't have the opportunity, you can always invest in a trolley reel.

For a simple garden hose, the Comfort Flex 15 mm from Gardena will be suitable in most situations. Knittedreinforcement, spiral-wrapped, it is flexible, does not twist and will protect you from knots that can be particularly annoying.

In case you have row plants to irrigate, don't hesitate to opt for a micro-porous model. With a length of 20 m, it will allow you to simply place your hose along the row, so as to supply the soil and roots with water without necessarily watering the leaves - some do not always withstand the sun after taking the moisture. In addition, the tip will also regulate the pressure and flow of your hose, and you will not have to be present for the duration of watering... The good life!

In the same principle if you want to water only the areas that interest you - let's say, those that suffer from drought - you can opt for the drip hose, which saves time but is still much more water-intensive than the micro-porous pipe and has the disadvantage of requiring an ideal pressure to operate, otherwise it risks watering too little in some places, and too much in others.

If you live in an apartment, with a balcony, or just want to water on a small area, the ideal solution is the spiralgarden hose. With a length of 15 m, it is very flexible and allows to water wherever you want, with low pressure, which facilitates access to all plants, even those to which it is sometimes a little more difficult to access.
