Raised second-tier grate for Cookking grill plate - 2 sizes

This grate adds a storey to your grill plate. Standing on it on three legs, it offers a second cooking surface nineteen centimetres above the first — and that is the whole point : both work at once, at two temperatures.

Two temperatures over one fire

The plate takes its heat by conduction and climbs hard : that is where you sear. The grate, nineteen centimetres higher, only receives what rises: markedly less. So you have a hot zone and a gentle zone at the same moment, over a single fire, without moving anything.

In practice this settles the problem of every barbecue: you sear below, then lift the piece to the upper tier so it finishes through to the middle without burning outside. Large cuts stop being a gamble.

Surface gained, not surface lost

The three legs cover almost nothing of the plate : the surface beneath stays usable. This grate adds 34 or 38 cm of cooking diameter, it does not take any away.

At a crowded table it changes the rhythm of the meal. You no longer cook in sittings: the first dish keeps warm upstairs while the next one sears below.

Feeding the fire without undoing it all

Because the whole thing stands clear, you add a log underneath without lifting the plate. The frame also takes a frying pan or a saucepan set on top, if you would rather cook in a vessel than on bars.

Choose it against your plate

The grate is chosen against the grill plate, not against the fire bowl. Plate of 78 or 82 cm gives a grate of 34 cm, 42 cm overall. Plate of 98 or 102 cm gives 38 cm, 52 cm overall. Height 19 cm in both cases, about 2.5 kg.

It fits our Cookking plates, plain steel or stainless. It cannot be used on its own: without a plate there is nothing to carry it.

Plain steel: what that means

Bars of plain steel, with no coating whatever, and the steel is approved for food contact. Nothing can migrate into what you cook.

In exchange, this steel rusts if left wet. Wipe after use, store dry, oil lightly before winter; the dark patina that settles in is normal and protective. The whole thing is welded, with no screws.
