The geotextile, also known as bidim (in connection with the name of the historical leader of the manufacturers of this product), the geotextile felt, originally used in construction, attracts more and more landscape gardeners.

    What is geotextile felt?

Geotextile felt is a fabric most often composed of synthetic materials, originally used mainly in building, civil engineering and agriculture.

The geotextile has the peculiarity of letting water pass through.

The basic objective of the bidim is to separate the material from a natural terrain with other materials. It will thus offer the advantage of allowing water to flow, while blocking the movement of the smallest materials from the natural terrain to the mixture of input materials.
Geotextile felt is also applied by landscapers for plant insulation. You will be able to plant plants in land that is not suitable by separating the material.

It will allow the passage of water and minerals without letting the two different layers of earth mix.

Thanks to its significant resistance to damage caused potentially by rocks, pebbles, rubble... it is also used to prevent the expansion of plants with invasive rhizomes.

How do I use geotextile felt in your garden?

In terms of layout, the geotextile felt will have two uses for you:

Indeed, with its ability to separate materials, it is strongly advised to integrate a layer of Geotextile under your gravel aisles.

If the geotextile does not prevent weeds from growing properly, it will block them and therefore will not allow them to emerge outside.

Protect your basin tarpaulin from external damage

As seen above, geotextile is extremely resistant, unlike basin tarpaulins that are easily damaged and cost more.

Using it to separate it from rubble, pebbles and other debris will ensure a long life to seal your pelvis.

Plant your heather plants in limestone soil

As it separates the layers, the heath earth will thus retain its specificities.

And it will also offer you two other benefits:

    • It allows you to insulate your shrub without depriving it of the moisture of the massif in which you install it
    • It houses your shrub from the nearby invasive roots
