Drought-Resistant Flower Seed Mix Vilmorin (Reference: 5867248) - An innovative floral solution designed specifically for eco-conscious gardens and for areas subject to watering restrictions. This expert Vilmorin blend brings together 9 hardy flower species chosen for their exceptional ability to thrive on very little water while still giving a generous, long-lasting display.
This mix is for gardeners keen to save water without giving up the beauty of their green spaces. Perfectly suited to Mediterranean gardens, to areas under summer watering restrictions and to beds that are hard to reach with irrigation. Private gardeners will appreciate how little upkeep it needs, while landscape professionals will find in it a lasting solution for large-scale planting.
Ideal for creating naturalistic borders, flowering a bank, brightening up a gravel garden or putting together beds of flowers for cutting. This blend gives a flower meadow effect in the very first year, with a succession of blooms spread from spring until the frosts.
This Vilmorin selection brings together 9 complementary varieties: Cornflower (field cornflower), Layia (yellow and white tidy tips), Eschscholzia (orange Californian poppy), Gypsophila (white baby's breath), Coreopsis (golden yellow), Dimorphotheca (Cape marigold), Cosmos (pink, white, purple), Flax (azure blue) and Gaillardia (scarlet and yellow).
These species reach an average height of 50 cm, creating a balanced, harmonious whole. Their deep root systems let them draw moisture from well below the surface, cutting watering needs dramatically. The colour range runs from pure white to scarlet red, taking in every shade of yellow, orange, pink and blue, for a continuous floral display.
Sow from March to June directly in place, on soil that has been loosened beforehand and cleared of weeds. Broadcast the seed, mixing it with fine sand for an even spread, then rake lightly to bury it 0.5 cm deep. An initial fine spray of water helps germination, which takes 10 to 15 days depending on conditions.
These varieties adapt to every soil type, even poor and chalky ground. Once established (6-8 weeks after sowing) they need no more than a weekly watering during a long dry spell. Light thinning may prove necessary if the seedlings come up too thickly. Remove faded flowers regularly to keep the display going until the first frosts.
To make the most of the visual effect, pair this mix with ornamental grasses such as blue fescue or Stipa, for a contrast of textures. Round it out with drought-resistant perennials: lavender, cotton lavender or Russian sage, to give your beds structure.
Expert tip: sow in successive zones a fortnight apart to spread out the flowering. Collect the ripe seed at the end of the season to sow again the following year. Some species such as Cosmos and Eschscholzia self-seed naturally.
A mistake to avoid: too much watering encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowering. These plants prefer a moderate water stress, which stimulates flower production. In Mediterranean regions, go for an autumn sowing to get an early display in spring.
