A 200 cm tripod fitted with a crank winch. The grill rises and falls one-handed, loaded and scorching, with no link to unhook and no need to push the food aside.
A reinforced hook holds the chain and stops it running. Steel grill of 5 mm, in 50, 60, 70 or 80 cm.
Wood or charcoal. Powder-coated folding tripod. From 12 to 13.5 kg depending on the size.
This tripod takes a crank winch : the grill rises and falls without being touched. That is the only difference from a plain hanging model, and it is the one that changes everything once the meal is under way.
On a plain chain suspension, changing the height means unhooking a link. And at the moment you need to, the grill is loaded and scorching : it takes a glove, a free hand, and often pushing the food to one side to reach the chain. You end up never adjusting at all, and letting things burn.
With the winch, the adjustment is made one-handed, on the crank, away from the fire, while cooking continues. You can go down to sear at the start, then raise it gradually, exactly as you would work over a hearth.
The mechanism carries a reinforced hook that holds the chain and stops it slipping. On this kind of assembly, that is the critical part : a chain that runs is a loaded grill dropping into the embers. It deserves a check before every season, much as you would check a hammock fixing.
Continuous adjustment opens up cooking that a fixed suspension makes awkward. The clearest is the large joint : a leg of lamb, a whole chicken, a ham hock. You start high, let the heat work its way in at length, then drop down at the end to colour the skin. Without a winch, few people risk it and fall back on flat cuts that cook fast.
The second is handling a fire that is fading. Embers lose power as the evening goes on : rather than reloading constantly and reviving flames at the wrong moment, you lower the grill a few turns and carry on at the same apparent intensity.
The grill comes in 50, 60, 70 or 80 cm, in 5 mm steel. The wider the grill, the more the winch earns its place : a large full grill is heavy, and that is precisely what you do not want to handle by hand over a fire.
The fire is built on the ground, with wood or charcoal. The tripod stands on any flat surface.
The tripod is powder-coated and folds in half for winter or for transport. With the mechanism, the whole weighs 12 to 13.5 kg, half a kilo more than the version without a winch — a difference of no consequence when setting up.
