Tripod barbecue with winch 180 cm Cookking - steel grate, 4 sizes

A 180 cm steel tripod whose grate is set in height by a crank winch. That is the difference from a tripod on a chain : the height is changed with one hand, during cooking, without unhooking the grate or going near the flames.

What the winch really adjusts

Over a wood fire the heat is not steady : it rises sharply at lighting, drops back over the embers, climbs again when you add logs. With a fixed suspension you put up with that curve. The crank winch lets you follow it — lower the grate to sear, raise it when the fire picks up.

It is also what makes the appliance usable by one person alone. Raising a grate loaded with meat on a chain takes two hands and gloves ; with a crank one hand is enough and nothing passes over the fire.

A steel grate of 5 mm

The bars are 5 mm thick, in bare steel. That is thick for a hanging grate, and it is justified : a thin bar marks meat poorly and warps over a lively fire. This one keeps its heat and its shape.

The steel is bare, with no coating. It takes on a dark patina with use, which is normal and protective, but it rusts if left wet : wipe it after use, store it dry, oil it lightly before winter.

The tripod folds in half

The legs are powder-coated, which gives them a resistance to weather that bare steel does not have. The tripod is half-folding : it will not disappear into a car boot, but it stores along a wall and travels without being taken apart.

It takes wood as well as charcoal, laid straight on the ground or in a fire bowl placed underneath. This is an outdoor appliance, not a balcony barbecue.

Choosing the diameter

Four grate diameters, from 50 to 80 cm. The 50 suits two to four people, the 80 a full table. Beyond the number of guests, it is the fire that decides : a grate much wider than the fire heats poorly at its edges.

The height of the tripod stays at 180 cm in all four sizes. Only the grate and the weight change, from 11.5 to 13 kg.
